Gcinamasiko Storytelling and Book Celebration Festival 2013

The annual Gcinamasiko Storytelling and Book Celebration Festival will be held at the Diakonia Centre in the heart of the Durban city. Gcinamasiko is a key project of Dr Gcina Mhlophe – internationally respected Durban story-teller, author, activist, poet, playwright and director.

Much of Mhlophe’s energy is currently spent on encouraging young South Africans to read, and supporting projects to stock rural libraries for young people with culturally-relevant books.

The Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities led by Deputy Minister Hon. Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, MP, in partnership with Gcinamasiko Trust and Mango Airlines, will also be launching the Braille Edition of Dr Gcina Mhlophe’s book Stories of Africa translated into Braille by Biblionef South Africa, published by University of KwaZulu-Natal Press.

As a lead-up to the 2013 Disability Rights Awareness Month, 3 November to 3 December, under the theme - “Break barriers, open doors: for an inclusive society for all”, this event is a milestone in the integrating people with disabilities in literature and culture.
