The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport together with the Department of Community Safety will embark on Freight Safety Festive Season Campaign.
The campaign which will be rolled-out under the National theme of ‘Together we can save millions of lives’, is a build-up from the October Transport Month weighbridge activations where intensified safety operations on freight were conducted.
As MEC Ismail Vadi remarked at the recent Freight Summit, overloading of freight vehicles not only damages the road network and shortens its lifespan; it increases the risk of road accidents which puts a lot of financial pressure on both maintenance and construction budgets.
The initiative is aimed at reducing overloading, encouraging compliance and checking vehicle roadworthiness.
