Gauteng MEC for Health Hope Papo to take part in Mandela Day activities

Gauteng MEC for Health Hope Papo will join the country in celebration of Mandela Day at Leratong Hospital in West Rand and Ezibeleni School for children with disabilities in East Rand.

This day follows a request by the President of the country for the public to spare at least 67 minutes of their time by doing something useful within their communities - especially among the less fortunate.

At Leratong Hospital, MEC will witness cataract operation performed on 100 patients from across the province by the Islamic Association and Pakistan Community of South Africa to help reduce the backlog of cataract operations. 

At Ezibeleni School which caters for children with a wide range of physical and mild cognitive disabilities, MEC Papo will donate food, blankets, educational toys, books as well as assist in planting of trees and cleaning of the school grounds. Senior managers and officials from the department will also assist with cooking lunch for the kids and staff, relieving staff for the day by feeding and bathing children and provide entertainment for the kids on the day.

Other activities for the day will include donation of linen, pyjamas and sheets for paediatric unit by Absa at Odi hospital in Mabopane. Woolworths will also donate food and clothing to 10 poor families who collect ARVs at the hospital. Maponya 911 ambulances will be at the hospital to assist at the casualty. At Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, students and staff from University of Johannesburg will visit the hospital for a cleaning campaign while Old Mutual  will be donating R20 000 to buy chairs for the waiting area at the hospital. (Hospital PRO: Lungiswa Mvumvu: 082 319 1480).

Officials from Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Garankuwa will visit Leap High School in the area to deliver a health talk to young women and donate sanitary towels.(Hospital PRO: Nolo Bashe: 083 325 3622).

Forensic Pathology Services in the province will visit the St Kizito Orphanage at De Deur, in Vereeniging. Officials will be cleaning and donating food and clothing to the orphanage. (Phindi Thango: 071 602 1960).
