Gauteng Legislature hosts virtual Women’s Parliament, 14 Aug

As part of commemorating Women’s month, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) will on Friday, 14 August 2020 host its annual Women’s Parliament.  The 2020 Women’s Parliament, which will be held through virtual means, promises to be a solution driven gathering of women from various sectors of society as the country celebrates 26 years of Constitutional Democracy.

This year’s Women’s Parliament takes place as the country is faced with two pandemics in the form of Covid-19 and Gender Based Violence which have had devastating effects on women.

Due to the critical role women play in society, they find themselves being the hardest hit by Covid-19 and find themselves having to fend off increased instances of Gender Based Violence which has also been exacerbated by the current lockdown regulations aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.

The Women’s Parliament will therefore create a platform for women from different sectors of society to come together, raise their concerns and come up concrete solutions which should be addressed working together with the Provincial Government.

Topics to be discussed during the Parliament include:

Gender Based Violence and persisting spikes in Is the government able to deal with gender based violence considering the persisting spikes in domestic violence both physical and sexual violence: An assessment of the programs put in place in curbing GBV and Domestic Violence in Gauteng.

The impact of unethical conduct in the public service on women relying on government services, focusing on covid-19 social welfare mechanisms in cushioning struggles of women faced by job losses
Social grants as a means of poverty alleviation for women: An assessment of benefits and challenges of access to social relief at a time of Covid-19
