Gauteng Provincial Legislature hosts annual sector Parliament for senior citizens, 17 October 2017

Themed “Following up on our commitments to the Gauteng Senior Citizens”, this year’s Sector Parliament for Senior Citizens will be convened in the form of a roundtable discussion, targeting around 500 stakeholders from across the province.  Hosted by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, the event will provide a platform for senior citizens of Gauteng to directly engage with both the GPL and the GPG on various service delivery and social empowerment issues.

Topics for debate during the Dialogue are: Senior citizens under the active ageing program – how senior citizens can participate in the economy; Specialized care for the frail and ailing elders, how the quality of health care and services can be assessed; Implementation and management of advanced health care and improvement of safety standards as per the Older Persons Act, for elders who live alone; as well as Review mechanism of the home based care services, ascertaining  whether NPO’s are provided with sufficiently trained volunteers.

The Senior Citizens’ Parliament is scheduled to convene as follows:
Venue: San Kopano Community Centre, Alexandra
Date: Tuesday, 17th October 2017
Time: 10h00

The GPL has invited Members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (MPLs); Speaker of the City of Johannesburg; South African Older Persons Forum; South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC); Care givers to older people; Previous Senior Citizens Parliaments participants; and Veterans leagues from political parties to participate. Honourable Premier David Makhura has committed to form part of this year’s Sector Parliament, accompanied by Social Cluster MEC’s to ensure meaningful engagements and prompt implementation of Dialogue resolutions.
The GPL remains committed to its Constitutional mandates of oversight, law-making and public participation; and implement programmes that actively seek to improve the quality of life for the people of Gauteng.
