Gauteng Health MEC to join Healthy Heart Walk at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital

To mark an end to Heart Awareness Month, Gauteng Health MEC, Mr Hope Papo will tomorrow, Monday, 30 September 2013, join staff and patients at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital on a Healthy Heart Walk.

The 2.5km walk around the hospital will be an addition to stalls displayed in hospital street aiming at educating, informing and screening the public for conditions that lead to heart diseases.

Some of the identified causes of heart diseases include obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, high cholesterol, bad eating habits and lack of exercise.

In order to reduce the risk of heart diseases, people of Gauteng are encouraged to eat healthy food, exercise regularly, control lifestyle illnesses such as blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes as well as reduce alcohol intake and smoking.

To start the activities of the day, Head of Cardiology at the hospital, Prof Manga and his team will showcase interventions to treat heart diseases.
