Gauteng Health commemorates World TB Day in Sebokeng, 23 Mar

The Gauteng Department of Health will on 23 March 2018 commemorate World TB Day in Sedibeng District.

The day is celebrated annually on 24 March. Under the theme “uniting to end TB and HIV: South African leaders taking Action” the event aims to raise awareness about the burden of twin epidemics of TB and HIV.

The event will also will look at mobilising communities to test for TB, HIV and other lifestyle chronic diseases  as well as to find missing patients including those that are lost to follow up.

During this month’s long campaign which started on 1 March 2018, districts are focussing on key communities that are vulnerable to TB and HIV infection. During these activities, the community are taught on how to recognise the signs of symptoms of the disease, the importance of testing, the availability of treatment and promotion of health lifestyles.

On the day, various  activities will be conducted in vulnerable communities including taxi ranks, truck stops, informal settlements, shopping malls, hospitals, mines and peri - mining communities, Correctional Centers, churches, schools and other workplaces. Dialogue sessions will also be conducted on the day targeting the youth, Faith Based Organisations, Business Leadership, Traditional Leaders and Traditional Health Practitioners

In addition to TB awareness, other services which will be available include male medical circumcision on site, HIV counseling and testing, eye testing, prostate examination, screenings for chronic diseases as well as pap smears which help to detect cervical cancer as well as services from Home Affairs and SASSA.
