Gauteng to celebrate World Food Day

Gauteng's MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, invites members of the media to the celebrations of World Food Day.

World Food Day was proclaimed in 1979 by the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The aim of the day is to heighten public awareness on the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.

In 1980, the General Assembly endorsed observance of the day in consideration of the fact that "food is a requisite for human survival and well-being and a fundamental human necessity".

And with almost half of the world's six billion people living on less than two dollars a day, food security and poverty alleviation have become the biggest challenge to human society.

We therefore invite members of the media to attend this important event as the MEC will speak on how Gauteng fares in relation to food security and announce plans to ensure everyone in our province is food secure.

Details are as follows:
Date: Friday, 4 October 2013
