Gauteng Arts and Culture hosts Gauteng Arts in Schools Festival, 23 Feb

2018 Gauteng Arts In Schools Festival: Learners ready to launch careers in the Arts

Twenty one schools from across the province will take to the stage for top honours in the Gauteng Arts in Schools Festival, this coming Friday, 23 February 2018 at the UJ Arts Centre Theatre.

The festival is a culmination of the hard work put by practitioners who worked with the schools throughout 2017 teaching and facilitating lessons on various forms of the arts. These included dance, drama, music, visual arts and more as laid down in the school’s curriculum.

A product of the Gauteng Department of Arts and Culture, the arts in schools programme is aimed at introducing and growing the arts, targeting rural and township schools while creating jobs for arts practitioners.

This ground-breaking initiative is a direct response to the lack of qualified arts and culture educators and comprehensive education in the majority of public schools.

“As Gauteng we see arts and culture as an essential component of a child’s education. It (the Arts) can help children to be self-expressive, creative and innovative individuals.

“The festival is therefore not only about learners showcasing their talent but to acknowledge their acquired skills to use creative ways to look at the world and its challenges. We have ignited the fire in them and hope to see flames,” says MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko.

Acclaimed actress Pebetse Nolo Matlaila, who plays “Mokgadi” on the popular SABC 1s Skeem Sam, will be the guest speaker.
