“Freedom Park aims to uncover untold stories, store relevant histories and present to the public knowledge which will be of immediate value to its visitors and contribute to making Freedom Park a space for humanity and freedom,” says acting CEO of Freedom Park Ms Jane Mufamadi.

It is in this vein that Freedom Park seeks to host a seminar on the sterling role that Zambia played in the liberation struggle in the African continent. Particularly in the liberation of South Africa, Zambia is renowned for orchestrating and championing the downfall of one of the last bastions of colonialism.

Undeniably, Zambia remains one of the few countries that can pride themselves of playing a gallant and unrelenting role in their contribution to the struggle against apartheid.

Guided by the theme, The Lusaka influence: Zambia and its role in the liberation struggle agenda in Southern Africa” this seminar seeks to understand how the Zambian community, despite stern opposition and vengeance from the imperial powers, stood firm in its resolve to ensure that Africa’s dignity is restored in the global political landscape.

The establishment of Freedom Park as an institution tasked with a mammoth responsibility of honoring the heroes and heroines that fell during the protracted struggle against apartheid remains a historical footprint that has to be celebrated not only in South Africa but in the entire continent and the Diaspora. In particular, honour has to be bestowed to those global communities who relentlessly provided the oppressed masses of South Africa with the necessary political support that eventually led to the demise of the apartheid regime.

As the hallmark of peace-building, reconciliation, social cohesion and nation building, Freedom Park remains a strategic fulcrum around which the much-vaunted freedom and peace revolve and relentlessly unfolds.

Taking into account the pivotal role Freedom Park has played in the South African political fold since its inception, it comes as no surprise that this historic institution effervescently continues to pay political homage to the struggle stalwarts both within and outside the boundaries of the country.

“One of Freedom Park’s objectives is to embark on a broad-based initiative to strengthen relationships through active partnerships with continental and international institutions in continuing to emancipate the African voice” says Mufamadi.

This strategic objective provides the context and the political space for the history of the Zambian contribution to the liberation of South Africa, the region, and the continent should be told, preserved and presented to the public.
