Free State Sport hosts send-of function for Team Free State to 2014 SA Schools Championship, 9 Dec

Team Free State off to South African Schools Championships

The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will host a send-of function for Team Free State that will participate in the 2014 South African (SA) Schools Championship to be hosted in Pretoria from 10 - 15 December 2014. This send-of function will be hosted to congratulate the team and show full support as they depart to the SA Schools Championships.

The year 2012 marked the historic launch of the SA School Sport Championship in Tshwane as more than four thousand learners from all nine provinces competed for the title of national champion in the nine sporting codes. In 2013 the SA School Sport National Championships was hosted in Mangaung with the number of athletes increasing to more than seven thousand (7 000).

The athletes taking part in these Championships are provincial champions in their own right and partaking in the national championships in defence of provincial pride is an accolade in itself. Athletes participating at the SA School Sport Championship were selected through a process that kick-started at school sport competition level, proceeding to local, district and provincial competitions.

The Free State successfully implemented the programme at these different levels of the selection process from 9 August to 1 November. A total team contingent of 1 100 learners and educators that came through the said process will converge in Sasolburg on 9 December 2014 for the Official Team Send Off to Pretoria.

Members of Team Free State selected for participation at the national SA School Sport Championship were subjected to a training and performance schedule as put together by the District and Provincial High Performance Centers in an effort to reach the optimum level of performance at national level.

Teams taking part in the SA Schools Sport National Championships will compete in the following codes: Athletics, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Football, Gymnastics, Goal ball, Hockey, Jukskei, Khokho, Kgathi, Morabaraba, Netball, Rugby, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball and Swimming.

Both abled and disabled athletes will participate in these different codes. The Send-of function for Team Free State will be hosted as follows:
