Free State Environmental Affairs hosts 2018 Free State Environmental Management Awards, 18 May

Municipalities Go Greener and cleaner for awards

The environmental problems of the third world and developing countries including state such as South Africa are associated with poverty, diseases and social systems disintegration.

To positively respond to these environmental challenges, the department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs will host the 2018 Free State Environmental Management Awards at Phillip Sander Resort in Bloemfontein. As stated in the Budget speech, the project is to promote a clean and healthy environment in communities and schools teaching young minds about the phenomenon of global warming and its effects on their future.

Under the theme, “We Love Our Environment, We Love Free State” the competition also aims to change the attitudes by raising awareness and educating the province on good waste practices. About 19 municipalities entered the competition with hope to be named the greenest and cleanest town. Judges looked at the following in deciding who is the best: Cleanest and Greenest Town; Cleanest Ward; Best Support Company In Waste Recycling Equipment; Best Township Conservancy/ Public Participation; Climate Change Presentation Competition; Best LM Environmental Programme Implemented; Best Environmental Municipal Official.

The provincial winners will represent the province at the national awards to take place this year.
