DESTEA to host Tourism SaamTrek
The Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) will on 16 and 17 September 2022, host the Free State Tourism SaamTrek under the theme: “Rethinking Tourism—Opportunities await” at Phakisa Raceway near Welkom.
Post a two-year COVID-19 pandemic that crippled many businesses, especially the Tourism sector, Small and Medium enterprises, the Department intends to revive the Tourism sector and place it at the center of economic reconstruction and recovery; as well as reposition Free State as a ‘go to and not go through province’.
Through this Tourism SaamTrek, DESTEA will engage in various tourism activities to inspire traveling and adventure enthusiasts to visit the Free State. Such initiatives will further afford the tourism product owners from across the province to showcase their products and services.
In collaboration with strategic partners, the said event will be comprised of networking and business matchmaking sessions, food, locally brewed beverage stalls, and motorsports.

Tourism month activities are scheduled as follows:
- Free State Tourism SaamTrek 2022 will be on 16 – 17 September 2022, at Phakisa Raceway, Welkom. This is where industry experts and product owners will be showcasing their services.
- Astro Tourism Event will be hosted on 23 September 2022, in Bloemfontein This initiative aims to engage with relevant stakeholders, with the intent to formulate partnerships and introduce a new market which will be astrology focused.
- Free State Women in Tourism Stakeholder Engagement on 27 September 2022, at Welkom. Networking session with Female tourism product owners.
- Mandela Legacy Ride4Hope will be held on 29 September and 1 October 2022, at Villiers. It is a commemoration of the legacy of Nelson Mandela through a 4-day cycling tour. Day one will be in Gauteng, day 2 and 3 are scheduled to be in Free State, and day 4 will be in KZN.
