Women adapting to Women adapting to Climate Change National Dialogue
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) and The South Africa National Biodiversity Institute’s (SANBI) will host a Climate Change Adaptation and Gender Mainstreaming Dialogue on 8 and 9 March 2023, in Pretoria, Gauteng Province. The Dialogue takes place under the theme: Women Adapting to Climate Change.
The two-day event, hosting experts working in the field of climate change, resilience and adaptation as well as gender mainstreaming aims to deep dive into South Africa’s response to climate change, with a gendered lens, acknowledging that girls and women are impacted by climate change in very particular ways, exacerbating existing inequalities. The Dialogue takes place on the premise that girls and women are at increased risk with the phenomenon of climate change, impacting on them enjoying their human rights.
The National Dialogue will bring together representatives from international, regional, national and local government and non-governmental institutions and organisations to participate in sharing their experience and expertise on gender as it intersects with climate change.
The event coincides with International Women’s Day (8 March 2023) which is observed under the theme: DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for gender equality. The Dialogue will engage on how big data, new technologies, and artificial intelligence are be utilised to better track the impact of climate change in ever-increasing nuanced ways.
