The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) invites members of the media to the opening of the second UNiTE to End Violence Against Women Film Festival and Community Activism Workshop on Thursday, 6 December 2012 in Newtown, Johannesburg. The 2012 film program will run on 6 to 8 December in Gauteng and 14 to 16 December in the Free State provinces.
Under the theme, “56 years since the Women March to the Union Buildings, 56 years of Women United Against Poverty, Unemployment and Equality, ”the Festival will screen the selected film such as “You have Struck a Rock” by Deborah May. This 1981 film retells the history of the our liberation struggle heroines such as Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Dora Tamana and other leaders who stood against the pass laws in the 1950s. Also on the screen will be “Liberation Women/ week in week out”- a 1985 documentary film by Beata Lipman airs the views of South African women who campaigned against apartheid.
The DAC’s Chief Operating Officer, Ms Veliswa Baduza will deliver a keynote address at the opening event. Other guests include Ms Sophie De Bruyn of “1956” women activists and Dr Julitta Onabanjo of the United Nation Population Fund (UNIFPA).
Government-through the Department of Arts and Culture, continues to play a leading role in the festival through financial support and participation through its agencies in the film sector.
