Eastern Cape Rural Development and Agrarian Reform hosts provincial flock competition, 25 Aug

DRDAR will host provincial flock competition where farmers will compete for prizes worth about R100 000

The Eastern Cape of Department for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) working with the Eastern Cape Communal Wool Growers Association (ECCWGA) will host the Provincial Flock Competition at Tsolo Agriculture and Rural Development Institute (TARDI) tomorrow.

The competition aim to achieve DRDAR objectives of the Livestock Production Improvement Programme, which are to improve the quality and quantity of sheep and wool production on the province.

The Department seeks to enable these farmers to derive optimum economic benefit out of their agricultural activities through government supported customized partnerships with commercial partners and other entities to mutual benefit.

To ensure realization of the Departmental Economic Transformation Strategy, DRDAR is finalizing the renewing of the partnership with the ECCWGA through the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a duration of five years to support farmers.

This competition is a platform where farmers share information and interact with experts from DRDAR and its strategic partners so that they can improve productivity.

The Provincial Flock Competition is preceded by Local and District Competitions and participating farmers will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • Pure Merino Rams
  • Dohne Merino Rams
  • 4 to 8 tooth ewes
  • 2 tooth ewes
  • Lamb

Members of the media are invited to attend this event where participating farmers will win vouchers worth about R100 000p in the form of qaulity rams and ewes, animal feed and medicine.
