Eastern Cape Legislature promotes subsistence farming during Heritage Month, 26 Sept

50 food gardens for households as Koukamma hosts Heritage celebrations

On Saturday, 26 September 2015, the Speaker of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature, Ms Noxolo Kiviet, in conjunction with the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform will host a Heritage Programme.

This event is aimed at promoting subsistence farming as a mechanism to alleviate poverty through youth and women empowerment projects and is also intended to promote an understanding and appreciation of the national symbols.

Fifty households will be beneficiaries of the planned programme as community gardens will be established in the following areas Misgund, Krakiel and Louterwater. Added to this, young people will be trained in different agriculture related courses. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for the vast majority of the people many of whom try to make a living under difficult circumstances.

Koukamma municipality is characterised by low literacy levels, high rate of unemployment and poverty. Increasing their capacity to participate in agricultural production as a self-help project could have a beneficial effect on their current situation.

The event will take place at Misgund Community Hall and will be attended by the Hon. Speaker, Ms Noxolo Kiviet, the Mayor of Koukamma, Cllr Sam Vuso and Officials from the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform amongst others.

Members of the media are invited to the event and are kindly requested to confirm their attendance to:
