Eastern Cape Legislature hosts Youth Parliament, 12 Apr

Youth sector to present concerns and issues critical to young people at Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature’s Youth Parliament – 12 April 2019

The youth of the Eastern Cape will have the opportunity to list their needs, aspirations and interest to the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature and relevant stakeholders at a Youth Parliament that will be hosted by the Legislature on 12 April 2019 at 10h00 in the Raymond Mhlaba Chamber.

The Youth Parliament serves as a discussion platform to advance the youth agenda and encourages youth participation in lively debates to help move the province forward in addressing the challenges facing Eastern Cape youth. The input of the youth sector is regarded as invaluable by the Legislature in deepening democracy.

The theme ‘Empowering our youth to be active participants in the agenda of radical economic transformation’, will guide the discussions which will focus on the various mechanisms and efforts needed to accelerate youth development. The objectives of the Youth Parliament are the following:

  • Provide a comprehensive account on the implementation of the Provincial Youth Policy  and the previous Youth Parliament
  • Set the youth agenda for the Sixth administration of the Eastern Cape Province
  • Promote public education and provide a platform for participation in the legislative processes.
  • Promote and provide an opportunity for interaction between the youth sector and elected public representatives.
  • Provide a platform and promote dialogue between representatives of the youth sector and Members of the Executive Council on issues affecting their livelihood.
  • Highlight the Legislature’s commitment to use its oversight and law-making roles to change the socio-economic conditions of young people in the Eastern Cape.
  • Engage with youth formations

Approximately 500 participants, representing youth formations from the various municipalities and metropolitans, are expected to attend the Youth Parliament and bring progressive and responsible solutions to the following thematic areas:

  • Measures to support the absorption of youth into employment, as well as supporting  youth enterprises and cooperatives
  • Enhance youth participation in the land reform and agricultural revolution
  • Promoting youth involvement in high-potential sectors such as agro-industry, oceans economy, tourism and ICT
  • Promoting skilling and access to quality of health care for youth, as well as combating substance abuse 
  • Expanding implications of the 4th Industrial Revolution and opportunities for youth
  • Interventions for nation building and social cohesion
  • Protecting youth against all forms of abuse
