Eastern Cape Human Settlements holds public hearing on illegal house occupation, 9 Dec

The Public Hearings to probe illegal occupation of government subsidy homes in the Buffalo City Metropolitan (BCM) will commence on 9 December 2014 at Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre.

The hearings are aimed at resolving cases of illegal sales and allocations of free government housing subsidy in the area which has resulted in illegal occupations. Last week, during an EXCO outreach 41 families whose housing subsidies were approved are currently living in the bush of East Bank, East London while their homes were allocated to other families. This is one of many cases to be addressed during the correct occupation campaign.

BCM has been identified as one of the hotspots where this practice of illegal occupation is taking place in particular the misallocation of beneficiaries, illegal sales and occupation in areas such as Unit P, Reeston, Tshabo and Second Creek.

People who have been robbed of their free government subsidy homes and had to watch other people occupy their homes must come present their cases to the hearings. Members of the public are urged to bring along their IDs and proof of subsidies.

The hearings will be chaired by the MEC Helen Sauls-August where written and oral submissions will be accepted.  The hearings will also move into other areas in the Province such as Joe Gqabi, Alfred Nzo, OR Tambo, Chris Hani, Cacadu and the Nelson Mandela Metro.
