The dti to host The Company Law Symposium in Gauteng

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), in conjunction with the Specialist Committee on Company Law (SCCL) will host the Company Law Symposium at Emperors Palace, Kempton Park from 19 to 20 August 2014.

The purpose of the symposium is to discuss and consider important principles arising from the Companies Act, including mergers and acquisitions, fundamental transactions, directors and prescribed officer’s duties and responsibilities.

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies says the symposium will highlight the provisions of the Company Act which are considered important to the economy.

"The symposium will zoom into areas of the Act that impact on small businesses and support structures, share statistics and comparisons on mergers and acquisitions. The symposium will also discuss social and ethics committee in light of the corporate governance issues arising from time to time," adds Davies.

Davies also says there will be interactive discussions on the comparative company law and principles applicable in South Africa and the United States.

The Company Law Symposium will be attended by businesses, law practitioners, government officials and other stakeholders and organisations affected by the Companies Act of 2008.

The SCCL is a statutory body established under the Company Act of 2008 and part of its function is to advise the Minister of Trade and Industry on the Implementation of the Company Act.
