Destitute families to get new homes for Christmas in Graaf Reinet

MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls-August will handover newly built homes to destitute and vulnerable families in Mandela Park, Kroonvale GraafReinet on Friday, 6 December 2013. The house handovers will move these families from shacks into spending their first Christmas in decent homes.

The beneficiaries are part of over one thousand beneficiaries who have been moved from shacks into their new homes by government in GraafReinet.

The department has also developed guidelines for the provision of housing units improve quality of houses built for destitute people in the province. This year 1 200 houses will be built for destitute families.

The new  guidelines make provision for the Internal and External Walls Plastered, waterborne Sewerage(urban),running Water inside the house(urban), bathroom(urban)internal, sanitation- VIP or alternative sanitation, rain water Tank(Rural),Apron(As per NHBRC Manual),solar geyser, floor Tiling, PVC, fencing of the entire yard, ceiling, specified roof covering, disabled person provision, greening namely. The normal houses don’t have these provisions.

The backlog of destitute people(inability to meet subsistence needs i.e. Lack of  assets, labour and livestock, dependence on other people and individuals vulnerable to erratic weather and other shocks) Housing stands at 4 000.

  • Back ground: He is disabled using a wheel chair, he was staying in a back yard shack with his mother for more than 30 years in Umasizakhe.

Mandela Park 273 Project:

1. Beneficiary: Arrie Minnies

  • Age: 67
  • Erf : 9222
  • Back ground: He was staying in the farm Damesfontein for more than 21 years

 2. Beneficiary: Johannes Snell

  • Age: 89
  • Gender: Male
  • Erf: 9234
  • Back ground: He stayed in the old Mandela Park houses renting for 15 years now he stays with his daughter and 4 grandchildren.
