The Deputy Minister in the Presidency Ms Thembi Siweya, to unveil the brand-new studios at Intokozo FM 101.2 MHz Community Radio station
The Media Development & Diversity Agency (MDDA), led by the Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Ms Thembi Siweya, will unveil the brand-new state-of-the-art broadcast studios at Intokozo FM 101.2 MHz, on Saturday, 2022, in Umlazi, eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
The radio station, which has an estimated 100,000 listeners, was created by youth from the informal settlement who came together in 2013 seeking to provide youth with a voice on critical issues such as HIV/AIDS, gender-based violence, social cohesion, and rising unemployment. Intokozo means “happiness” or “joy” in isiZulu. The station is one of the five community radio stations that was severely affected by the civil unrest and looting in KwaZulu-Natal Province in July 2021.
According to Mr Mxolisi Ntanzi, the Intokozo FM Station Manager, Inkunzi isematholeni (the future of this country is in the young people’s hands). Intokozo FM’s payoff line is “Young People’s Choice).
“We tackle social issues by inviting different people to come and speak on air about ways to combat them. We also invite graduates and experts who can advise young people on the paths to follow to get into fields such as entrepreneurship, agriculture etc,” he says, adding: “We have also had highly successful road campaigns in the township which provide the youth with access to people who can assist them. We have educational programmes for schools to encourage students to study and have hope in their future.”
The community radio station broadcasts 24/7 days a week, and the broadcast format is 55% talk and 45% music. The broadcast languages are 60% isiZulu, 35% English and 5% isiXhosa.
The new state-of the art studios will elevate the quality of broadcasting, making it appealing to potential partners and propel Intokozo FM 101.2 MHz to even greater heights.

Date: Saturday, 03 September 2022
Time: 09h00-13h00
