Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla visits Kokstad and Westville Correctional Centres, 10 and 11 Dec

The Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Mr Thabang Makwetla, will this week visit Kokstad Correctional Centre and Westville Correctional Centre, in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, 10 December and Thursday, 11 December respectively, as part of improving service delivery.

The two centres have been in existence for over 20 years, with Ebongweni Correctional Centre, in Kokstad, being one of the maximum facilities of its kind in the country. Access to the centre is electronically controlled and monitored by cameras, which have contributed significantly in addressing escapes. The centre prides itself with zero escapes in the past six (6) years, and is continuously working hard to maintain this status.

The centre has 1,440 approved bed spaces, and currently houses 996 offenders. Other achievements include the of building three classrooms for Kokstad Public Primary School and a house at Vulamehlo through the use offender labour, as well as victim representation during Parole Board hearings
