Deputy Minister Pinky Kekana conducts Flood Disaster Management Oversight in Deelpan Village, 24 May

Deputy Minister Pinky Kekana will on the 24th of May visit Tswaing Local Municipality in Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality in the North West Province as part of the departmental mandate to conduct oversight monitoring and to assess damage in flood affected areas.

Located in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, Deelpan Village experienced the first flooding of the season on the 17th of December 2021.

This was followed by additional flooding again on the 18th of February 2022 and lastly on the 06th of March 2022.

The flooding is as a result of three (3) sources namely: the rainfall associated with the effects of Climate Change, the water flowing into the village from other areas and as well as the water coming from the already saturated ground water table causing some sorts of fountains.

As a consequence of the floods, 75% of the village is currently underwater/flooded.

During the visit, the Deputy Minister will be briefed on the Plans for the area by the Disaster Management Team and conduct a walk about in the flooded village.

The Deputy Minister will be accompanied by Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo, Deputy Minister of COGTA, Obed Bapela and Deputy Minister of Human Settlement, Ms. Pamela Tshwete.
