Deputy Minister visits Rustenburg schools on maths and science education
With the 2013 matric pass rate in mathematics and physical science showing a slight increase compared to 2012, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Michael Masutha, will visit several high schools around Rustenburg in the North West on 20 January, to encourage learners and teachers to work even harder in improving these subjects.
South Africa is under pressure to produce much-needed science and technology skills for research and development purposes and the number of Grade 12 graduates in mathematics and physical science is crucial in achieving this.
The maths pass rate for the matric class of 2013 increased from 54% in 2012 to 59.1% and in physical science from 61.3% to 67%. However, a much higher pass rate is needed if South Africa is to improve its global economic competitiveness.
Advocate Masutha will address learners and educators during assembly and break times at HF Tlou High School, President Mangope High School both in Tlhabane, and Royal Bafokeng High School in Phokeng.
He will be accompanied by education officials in the district and Ms Lerato Molebatsi who is manager of the North West University Science Centre in Mafikeng, who will highlight the importance of science centres in the learning and teaching of these subjects.
The Deputy Minister will also visit schools in Limpopo.
