Deputy Minister Maggie Sotyu leads International Women's Day celebrations, 6 Mar

The Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture Hon. Makhotso Maggie Sotyu to lead the commemoration of International Women’s Day and Honouring of Mme Albertina Sisulu at the State Theatre, Gauteng

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated worldwide on 08 March.  In some countries it has been declared a national holiday.  South Africa has also celebrated it over the years especially post 1994.  IWD is an opportunity for citizens of the world to conduct introspection with regards to women’s accomplishments and challenges.

In 2018 South Africa is marking two important centenaries.  The main centenary is dedicated to Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela, the first President of a democratic South Africa.  Had he been alive he would be 100 years this year.  Of equal importance is the Centenary of Albertina Sisulu a struggle heroine in her own right.  And so activities have been planned to remember and honour Albertina Sisulu as an apartheid activist.

The World Economic Forum's 2017 Global Gender Gap Report showed that gaps still persist and it would take two hundred years for the world to achieve gender equality.  And so the #PressforProgress was coined as a theme for IWD 2018.
