Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts addresses Council for Built Environment’s Conference, 5 Dec

The Council for the Built Environment hosts inaugural Conference on Persons with Disabilities

Public Works and Infrastructure Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts will on Tuesday 05 December address the Council for the Built Environment’s (CBE), inaugural conference on persons with disabilities to be held at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.

South Africa still faces challenges in advancing the rights of persons with disabilities despite having a progressive Constitution and other legal frameworks. In this regard, CBE, which is tasked with instilling good conduct within the Built Environment Professions, mobilising transformation, protecting the interest of the public and advising the South African Government on Built Environment related issues, is hosting this conference in order to advance the needs of people with disabilities.

The 3rd of December is the International Day of Persons with disabilities and is also celebrated as National Disability Rights Awareness Day. Under the theme “Co-creation of spaces which entrench universal access”, the CBE conference on persons with disabilities aims to “consolidate and accelerate rights of persons with disabilities.” Among challenges still faced by People with disabilities in the Built environment is physical access to many buildings which don’t have ramps, hand rails, etc, heavy doors that are hard to open and close, narrow doorways and hallways, poor signage that does not cater for the visually impaired.
