Department of Women to impart needed skills on Mandela Day

As the country remembers global icon and former president Nelson Mandela on Friday, 18 July the Department of Women will also take part in efforts to make every day a Mandela Day by cleaning and imparting valuable skills to women.

The department will line with the 2014 Mandela Day theme and responding to the call by the President to take pride in our country and clean South Africa fold their sleeves to make a difference at two Tshwane care centres.

The department will be at the Porter’s House for Women and Children and The Rivoningo Care Centre in the City of Tshwane. Over and above cleaning, two legacy projects (sewing and gardening) will be initiated at the centres. This will go a long way in empowering women and young women with the skills that will enable them to be economically active.

Commenting on the department’s activities Minister Susan Shabangu during her Budget vote said “It is with heavy hearts, although, with great determination, that we will for the first time since the inception of the Mandela Day, be volunteering our services in recognition of Madiba’s selflessness without the international statesman in our midst.”

The Mandela Day initiatives will take place as follows:
Date: Friday, 18 July
Sewing Project: Porter’s House - 288 Burgers Park, Pretoria Central (cnr Burgers Park Avenue and Lillian Ngoyi Street)
Time: 10h30

Gardening Project: Rivoningo Care Centre – 281 Mosca Street, Pretoria central (next to the Pretoria Zoo)
