Department of Labour will tap into an untouched industry: funeral undertaking for investigation

The Department of Labour will undertake an investigation into the funeral undertaking business in the Eastern Cape to investigate conditions of employment and introduction of a minimum wage in the industry. The public hearings will be held from the 18 November 21 November 2013.

The process forms part of the Employment Conditions Commission (ECC) campaign to create a sectoral determination (SD) for the industry.

The drive will culminate with Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant announcing a new wage for the industry at the end of March 2014 in line with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA).

The public hearings will kick start with site visits in the funeral undertaking business and then a public meeting with both employers and employees of this sector.

“The Department of Labour mandate is to contribute to economic growth and as well as protecting vulnerable workers.Therefore this initiative will make sure that we are striking a balance” said Mr Bheki Gama who heads Department of Labour in the Eastern Cape.
