The Department of Environmental Affairs to release the Rhino Issue Management report

The Department of Environmental Affairs will release the Rhino Issue Management (RIM) report at a stakeholder engagement to be held at the Premier Hotel, OR Tambo on Wednesday, 24 July 2013.

The recommendations contained in the report will be discussed at the stakeholder workshop.

South Africa has been experiencing a surge in rhino poaching since 2008. In 2012, a National Consultation Process headed by Mr Mavuso Msimang, was undertaken as part of the interventions aimed at finding a solution to the present scourge of rhino poaching in South Africa. The RIM facilitated stakeholder engagements on the key issues of rhino conservation, funding, safety and security and trade.

The report was adopted by Cabinet in February 2013, and tabled by the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa, at a meeting with MECs of environment of the nine provinces (MINMEC) last month. Mrs Molewa had undertaken in February to make the findings of the RIM process public once she had engaged with the MINMEC.

The media are invited to the stakeholder engagement.
