Department of Basic Education continues community based teacher recruitment campaign

The Department of Basic Education in partnership with the Kara Institute will intensify the Community Based Recruitment Campaign. Dr Mathole Motshekga of the Kara Heritage together with Themba Kojana, Acting Deputy Director-General for Teacher Development will launch the recruitment campaign for 2014 as part of the Funza Lushaka Bursary Program.

The campaign is aimed at addressing the teacher shortages in the country by recruiting and training them to have appropriate skills needed to provide quality education to the learners.

Established In 2007, the bursary programme satisfies the broad departmental goal of meeting the supply and demand needs for high quality teachers to meet national demand.

A District-Based Recruitment Campaign was launched by the department in 2012 and specifically targets learners coming from rural and poor communities and assists them in gaining access to the bursary and to invest in more well qualified teachers that will be able to plow back and teach in rural areas.
