Defence Reserves unveil new university graduates

On Tuesday 21 January, the Defence Reserves – the part-time component of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will unveil one hundred and four (104) graduates of its University Reserve Training Programme (URTP) selected from six universities in the Gauteng and North West provinces in a military parade that will be held at Regiment Mooirivier in Potchefstroom at 10h00.

The URTP is a military training programme implemented by the SANDF aimed at enhancing the intellectual and leadership capabilities of the Reserve Force of the SANDF.

Following a highly successful pilot programme in 2011, the SA Army rolled-out the URTP when sixty (60) students from the University of the Free State and the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein were recruited for voluntary part-time military training.

Moreover, the programme has contributed one hundred and fifty–three (153) commissioned officers to all arms of service of the SANDF since its inception. The students participating in the URTP are full-time undergraduates or postgraduates who undergo their military training during university recess periods.

The recruits who successfully complete their military training and academic courses will be appointed as junior officers in the SANDF. Their military careers will be developed in accordance with a unique part-time training programme offering them the opportunity to follow both a civilian and military career.

You are cordially invited to send a journalist and/or a photographer to cover the event.
