Correctional Services hosts women in construction graduation ceremony for female offenders, 14 May

A progressive women in construction graduation ceremony for female offenders in Correctional Services, will be held in Pollsmoor Correctional Centre on Thursday 14 May 2015, as part of a build-up programme to the delivery of the DCS budget vote speech next week. Justice and Correctional Services Minister, Adv.  Michael Masutha will be delivering his second budget vote speech of the fifth administration of the South African Government on Wednesday 20 May 2015 in the National Assembly in Cape Town.

The graduation ceremony of 80 female offenders will be preceded by a tour of the facility and the demonstration of the capacity building programme instituted to mainstream women in key fast growing industries in South Africa, which include construction, recycling and beadwork. The graduation is a culmination of an intensive skills development and training in the fields of building construction, recycling, plastering and tiling as well as beadwork. The targeted beneficiaries of the “Train the Trainer” programme, have also been skilled in transferring production and construction skills to fellow female offenders, to break the traditional gender based training. The programme is an integral part of the broader rehabilitation of offenders, which seeks to prepare offenders for productive lives after release and for sustainable social reintegration.
