Competition Commission holds Transport Market Inquiry at Durban, 27 to 29 Jun

Transport Market Inquiry moves to Kwazulu-Natal

The media is invited to Competition Commission’s public hearings to be held in Durban from tomorrow. The hearings will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 27 to 29 June 2018 at the Durban International Convention Centre.

Public hearings have already been held in Gauteng and the Western Cape. The Commission is conducting a market inquiry into the land based public passenger transport sector to understand the general state of competition. There’s a reason to believe that there are features in this sector that may prevent, distort or restrict competition.

The focus will include price setting mechanisms, price regulation, route allocation, allocation of operational subsidies, transport planning, and transformation in terms of ownership patterns in the land based public passenger transport industry.

Some of the organisations and companies that will testify include representatives from eThekwini Metro, Provincial Department of Transport, SANTACO Durban Central, SANTACO Provincial office, Uber, Taxify, South African Metered Taxi Association and other metered taxi operators. Bus companies will also testify such as Africa People Movers, Nozulu Coaches, Newlands Bus Operators Association and Civic organisations (SANCO, Metro Rail KwaZulu Natal region).

The hearings will be held as follows:

KwaZulu-Natal:
Date: 27 – 29 June 2018
Venue: Durban International Convention Centre, 45 Bram Fischer Road, Durban
