Committee visits Medupi Power Station

Members of the Portfolio Committee on Economic Development will tomorrow, Thursday visit Medupi Power Station in Lephalale, Limpopo as part of the Committee's two-week long oversight programme to assess and scrutinise the success, impact of various state-funded projects and their contribution to the economic development in the country.

The Committee has already visited several big and small projects including Transnet's Locomotives manufacturing site, Gautrain, Nissan SA Plant in Rosslyn and multi-million rand Nguni Cattle Project in the North West. It also held roundtable discussions with the management, beneficiaries and small-scale enterprises around how their job creation and poverty alleviation plans are aligned to the National Growth Plan.

The visit will enable the parliamentarians to ascertain the status of this new power station, which will help address power shortages in South Africa, and the impact of the project on the community and in advancing economic development objectives.

The visit will culminate in Polokwane on Friday where the Committee will meet with various stakeholders, including provincial government authorities, business people, cooperatives and members of public and several state-owned entities reporting to the Economic Development Department.

Details of the Polokwane discussions:
Date: Friday, 2 August 2013
Time: 09h00 – 13h00
Venue: Auditorium, Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism.
