Commissioner Zacharia Modise opens abattoir at Baviaanspoort Correctional Centre, 4 Sept

The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr. Zach Modise, will officially open an abattoir at Baviaanspoort Correctional Centre on Friday 04 September 2015. The recapitalised and revamped abattoir will provide  meat to the centre and other nearby management areas and also be used to equip offenders with abattoir skills. The abattoir is accredited to slaughter pigs and cattle with an average of 60-90 pigs slaughtered weekly, depending on the demand.

In his 2015/16 Budget Vote Speech Minister Masutha mentioned that “Correctional Centres will adopt a particular community and share their expertise and advanced models for food production, and expose unemployed youths to technical skills”. In realising the Minister’s vision, the abattoir will not only benefit offenders. Unemployed youth will also be skilled and surrounding communities from poor backgrounds will benefit from the meats as part of the Department’s poverty alleviation programme.
