Chief Albert Mvumbi Luthuli Memorial Lecture by Dr Frene Ginwala

The Department of Arts and Culture, the Luthuli Museum and the University of KwaZulu-Natal will host the Chief Albert Luthuli 7th Memorial Lecture under the theme “For tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”. The event will take place on Saturday, 16 November 2013 at University of KwaZulu-Natal (MH Joosub Hall), Westville Campus, Durban.

Chief Albert Luthuli was the first African leader to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. The award in 1960 was due to his contribution to the peaceful resolution of conflict in society. All through his life he fought for human dignity, political freedom and social prosperity. He was the President of the ANC in 1952 until his death in 1967. He championed the development of a South Africa that would be democratic, non-sexist and non-racist.

The Department of Arts and Culture, as tasked by the cabinet in 1998, has initiated number of National Legacy Projects. These projects acknowledge the role of all South Africans who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of this country. This lecture serves to honour the life of Chief Luthuli as a liberation icon of our country, as well as ensuring that his ideas, philosophies and vision live on.

As we mobilise the nation towards 20 years of freedom and democracy celebrations, through unearthing the untold stories and recognising the unsung heroes and heroines, government acknowledges all who participated in the liberation struggle, and laid the foundation for our freedom.
