Arts and Culture to unveil Painting Democracy exhibition at MACUFE
The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) will unveil a series of paintings produced by 20 local artists as part of the 20 Years of Freedom celebrations. The exhibition, entitled Painting Democracy, will open on Saturday 11 October 2014 at the MACUFE (Mangaung Cultural Festival) in Bloemfontein.
The exhibition captures a series of paintings depicting key moments in South Africa’s 20 years of freedom and democracy. The project is comprised of portraits of prominent South Africans, including politicians, artists and other public figures, as well as some of the musicians featured on the programme of MACUFE.
These paintings will also be used as murals on the walls of strategic places such as the N8 subway that leads into the city of Bloemfontein, as moving boards on display at concert venues, as well as in a permanent exhibition at the Art and Craft Market at the corner of Markgraaf and Elizabeth Streets in Bloemfontein.
The Painting Democracy project is in line with the Department of Arts and Culture’s Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) strategy, whose objectives include creating jobs, promoting cultural precincts across the country as well as optimising the economic potential of the arts sector.
