Arts and Culture hosts Youth Month programme in Kimberley

The Department of Arts and Culture will host the Youth Month programme scheduled to kick-start on Friday, 13 to 15 June 2014 in Kimberley, Northern Cape. The programme is aimed at engaging young people on the achievements and progress made by government in youth development over the past 20 years, as well as the challenges that still exist.

Minister Nathi Mthethwa will attend the official opening of the 20 Years of Democracy Exhibition at Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre on Sunday, 15 June 2014. He will also officiate at the National Youth Day Celebrations on Monday, 16 June 2014 at Galeshewe stadium where the Deputy President, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver a keynote address. Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi will lead the Arts and Culture Youth Programme.

The year 2014 marks the 38th anniversary of the June 16 Soweto and other related uprisings. The uprisings ended tragically as large numbers of young people were killed by the apartheid government when they protested against the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. This day is popularly known as the Soweto Uprising or June 16.

Leading to this historic day, various government departments, the government agencies and private sector will hosts various Youth Month activities around the country.

Time: 14h00 to 16h00, Mayibuye Multipurpose Centre

Opening of the exhibition by Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi. The private sector, different government departments and agencies will exhibit programs aimed at addressing the challenges faced by young people as well as offering government services by Social Development, DHA, Health, NYDA and others.

Youth Dialogue in Arts and Culture: Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi, MEC Lebohang Motlhaping, NYDA Chairperson Yershen Pillay, National Arts Council Representatives, industry experts and representatives from the relevant provincial structures in arts and culture will engage youth on opportunities available to young people.

Youth and 20 years of Freedom Dialogue: Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi and Social Cohesion Ambassadors will engage young people on 20 Years of Freedom.
