Our Constitution obliges us to "honour those who suffered for justice and freedom in our land".

Inkosi Miskomfeni Dlamini, great grandfather of the Dlamini people in Bulwer, was wrongfully jailed and hanged on 14th December 1921 in Pietermaritzburg Old Prison. Later this year (2013), the Department of Correctional Services will honour Inkosi Miskomfeni Dlamini.

On 10th April 2013, President Jacob Zuma officially renamed the Department of Correctional Services' Pretoria Management Area to Kgosi Mampuru II Management Area. Kgosi Mampuru II was hanged at the Pretoria Central Prison on 22nd November 1883. Kgosi Mampuru was a revolutionary, who fiercely resisted colonial rule.

The New York Times, of 19th December 1883, reads as follows: “Details have been received here by mail of the recent hanging of the Chief Mampoer at Pretoria. Mampoer was led naked to the jail yard in the presence of 200 whites. The first rope used broke when the trap was sprung and Mampoer fell into a pit below. He was dragged out however and another attempt to hang him was successful.”
