Adolescent pregnancy - responding to the challenge in Limpopo

The Department of Social Development in Limpopo will commemorate World Population day on Friday under the theme “Adolescent pregnancy-responding to the challenge in Limpopo”.

The theme is categorically informed by the challenges the province faces in relation to teenage pregnancy and partly because of the numerous interventions in place to deal with those challenges.

A study conducted by the department during the period of 2011/12 found that Limpopo was one of the provinces that recorded a high number of teenage pregnancies among other provinces. The study also found that factors associated with teenage pregnancy were exposure to sex, psycho-social, economic, cultural and household. In line with the global agenda, the theme will focus on the following:

  • Adolescent pregnancy and consequences
  • Sexual Debut
  • Adolescent contraceptive use
  • Child marriage

The Commemoration of World Population Day will take place as follows:

Date: 26 July 2013
