67 vegetable gardens for households in Khuma – 67 minutes and more for Madiba

The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will on Thursday, 18 July join the world in honouring Madiba’s 95th birthday by establishing vegetable gardens and handing over garden tools at Khuma, Stilfontein.

Sixty-seven households and five other agricultural projects (New Nation Project, Philane vegetable project, Khuma clinic garden, Ward 31 community garden and Bokamoso Piggery), will be the beneficiaries of the programme planned for the day.

The Mandela Day activities will be delivered in line with the department’s broader campaign on “One family, One food garden”, which seeks to encourage communities to establish gardens and sustain vegetable production for household consumption.

The MEC for Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Desbo Mohono who will lead a team of departmental Senior Management and staff in planting vegetables and fruit trees, says by devoting their time to this noble cause, many underprivileged communities’ lives will be changed for the better.

“This day serves to bring together people to fight poverty and other social disorders, and our department is geared up and ready to provide support in tackling these challenges”, says MEC Mohono.

The department’s 67 minutes for Madiba programme will also be taken to Marikana, Piet Plessis and Verdwaal 1 and 2 later in the month, where vegetable gardens will be established and production inputs provided to communities.
