The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children is an international campaign established by the Centre for Women‘s Global Leadership (CWGL) in New Jersey (US) in 1991.

This year will mark the 13th Anniversary of the campaign in South Africa. It is one of the second largest social mobilisation events against violence on women and children beyond the State of the Nation Address of the President of the Republic of South Africa.

Every year, Government departments, Civil Society Organisations, Faith-based Organisations, Business Sector and Chapter 9 Institutions (including the Commission for Gender Equality) work together to broaden the impact of the campaign. By supporting this campaign, thousands of South Africans have also helped to increase awareness of abuse and build support for victims and survivors of abuse.

In responding to its constitutional mandate and as one of the Institutions established to support constitutional democracy the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) is a catalyst for the attainment of Gender Equality. Through its programmes the CGE will not only be advocating against gender discrimination and violence but also importantly will push for policy change and cohesion.
