Gauteng to remember the Haitian people and highlight issues affecting women and children at home on International Women’s Day

This Sunday, 7 March 2010, the Gauteng Provincial Government will commemorate International Women’s Day celebrated on 8 March by pledging solidarity with women and children in Haiti whose country was hit by an earthquake in January 2010.

The gathering will also be used to pay tribute to the achievements of women in Gauteng and South Africa and highlight their needs and concerns.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and Health and Social Development MEC
Qedani Mahlangu will lead those in attendance in highlighting issues that affect women and children. These issues include poverty, woman and child trafficking and sexual abuse.

The event will be attended by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) focusing on women, men and women from different religious groups and the Progressive women’s movement.
