Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) to celebrate Mandela Day working developing and greening Evaton

As part of honouring the legacy and the spirit of former State President Nelson Mandela, Gauteng MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, and her department will embark on developing school food gardens during the Mandela Day celebrations on 18 July 2010. These gardens will complement the present feeding schemes at schools inEvaton. The schools the MEC will be visiting include: Jordan Senior Secondary School in Ward 4, Ntsele Primary School in Ward 42 and Letshego Primary School in Ward 43.

Evaton as part of Sedibeng District is faced with the challenges of air pollution and the department will plant trees and clean-up areas surrounding the schools as part of the broader strategy of environmental education and creating awareness and fighting climate change. Most importantly, the department shall advise learners on scarce skills careers which can be followed within the agriculture sector. HIV and AIDS volunteer testing will also be on offer.

MEC is calling on all communities in Evaton to take responsibility for their schools by joining her and the department in volunteering for 67 minutes for Mandela Day. This will be celebrated annually as part of the social commitment of individuals to communities.
