First Africa Parliamentary Knowledge Network Plenary and first Africa hosting of World e-Parliament Conference, Pan African Parliament, Gallagher Estate, Midrand Gauteng

The first plenary of the Africa Parliamentary Knowledge Network (APKN) and the World e-Parliament conference, hosted for the first time in Africa, both aim to promote sustainable high quality information services by Parliaments.

The APKN plenary aims to provide a continental platform for promoting inter-Parliamentary dialogues, high quality continent-wide capacity building programmes and common information services. The World e-Parliament Conference provides an international platform for these activities.

Leaders, Parliament Speakers, Members of Parliament, and Secretaries-general, senior Parliamentary officials, academics and experts from international organisations will be attending both events.

The APKN plenary, which runs from 19 to 20 October, is being hosted jointly by the Parliament of South Africa and the Pan African Parliament (PAP).

The APKN was established in June 2008 at an international conference hosted by the Parliament of Egypt and attended by representatives from 37 national and regional assemblies in Africa.

The World e-Parliament Conference, on 21 and 22 October, is organised by the United Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Parliament of South Africa, the PAP and the Global Centre for ICT in Parliament.

This World e-Parliament Conference, held for the first time in Africa, builds on World e-Parliament conferences held in Geneva in 2007, Brussels in 2008 and Washington in 2009.
