Environmental Affairs to host open day aboard SA Agulhas on Saturday, 24 July 2010

The Department of Environmental Affairs, in partnership with the MTN Sciencentre, is to host an open day aboard South Africa’s only polar research and supply vessel, the SA Agulhas on Saturday, 24 July 2010.

The SA Agulhas performs crucial relief and supply function to South Africa’s three remote research stations - Marion Island, Gough Island and SANAE in Antarctica. The SA Agulhas, which is scheduled to be replaced in 2012 by a new polar research and supply vessel, has been carrying supplies and personnel to the SANAP research bases in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica for more than 31 years.

The Open Day will give the public a unique opportunity to explore the polar research and supply vessel and find out more about its operations.

The open day will start at 09h00 and end at 15h00. The last tour will leave at 14h30.

Address: East Pier, (next to the helicopter landing pad), East Pier Road (V&A Waterfront), Cape Town
