Education MEC to address the Maritime Summit

In pursuit of parity with sister coastal provinces, the Eastern Cape Department of Education MEC, the honourable Mahlubandile Qwase will tomorrow 12 August 2010 open a two day provincial Maritime Summit at the Port Alfred Halyards Hotel at 10:00 am.

The fundamental agenda and intention of the summit will be to consider the inability of introducing maritime studies in the province. This summit comes amidst the investigations by the department to open a maritime high school in the province as it has the longest stretch of beaches and three ports servicing the entire Southern Africa, namely the East London, Port Elizabeth and the port of Ngqurha. The school will also help develop the maritime students for entry level qualification to college or university studies.

All education stakeholders that include local universities, the three ports and the industry are expected to be represented in this summit which seeks to map a way forward for the province in the maritime field.

NB: All members of the media are invited in this summit as it will align and craft a strategy to run FET colleges ahead of their hand over to the Higher Education Ministry in 2012.
