Eastern Cape government to celebrate Women’s Month

The Eastern Cape Premier Ms Noxolo Kiviet and her Executive Council will on 21 August 2009 host a provincial leg of the Women's Month celebrations in Mount Fletcher at Xaxazana Village at the Sidinane High School. The event follows on the heels of a successful national Women's Day event which was held in Vryheid on 9 August 2009.

Premier Kiviet said, "As we celebrate this year's Women's Month, we should salute women who continue to work tirelessly in our province and else where in the country to ensure the realisation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). To them we say your contributions, as small as they seem, will one day add up to something that we can all look back at and be proud off."

Premier Kiviet said women should work as one, because a collective of women working together towards a shared goal will achieve more. She said this was the case on 9 August 1956 when women from all walks of life joined forces to protest against the extension of pass laws to African women.

"We need woman to join forces again to fight poverty and underdevelopment in our country," said Premier Kiviet.

The theme for this year's Women's Month is, "together empowering women for development and gender equity."
