The commemoration will be held at Mandileni village, Mt Frere in the Alfred Nzo district municipality. A series of events culminating to the main one on Monday, 8 March 2010 have been organised.

Background

International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8 March all over the world. This day is also held at the highest regard at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. On this day, women from all continents often segregated by linguistic, cultural, ethnic, financial and political distinctions celebrate what they have done and can do.

International Women’s Day is the event that originated in 1908, when in New York, United States of America, women demanded shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. In 1910, an International Conference of Women determined that each year, a day should be set aside to press for women’s demands.

International Women’s Day therefore stands for social equality, social justice, peace and development of women and men.
